Is Foiling the Future of Kiteboarding?
Foiling has taken over the kiteboarding industry. This style of riding offers maximum freedom for 3 reasons:
1) Go where ever you want very quickly. It is twice as easy to track upwind and downwind on foil than when on rail. While riding, you can average 18mph and even faster on more efficient foils.
2) Maximize your riding time. I have kited twice as much in and out of season than I did before I owned a foilboard. This is because the foils are so efficient that you can ride in wind as low as 8 knots.
3) Ride longer without the chatter you get in choppy conditions. When you are on plane, you hover over the chop. This makes the ride smooth and zen-like.
So will foiling be the future of kiteboarding? With the extended riding time, low impact on the body, and the ability to ride in light wind conditions, it’s certainly possible!
The International Olympic Committee is considering kiteboarding to be included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, with Formula Kite (foil racing) being the most likely sport to be included.
Now might be just the right time to learn how to foil!
